A Lahaina Halloween Built for Keiki, From the Cannery to Honokowai

October 22, 2026

Halloween in Lahaina once meant a single address. This year it means five, plus a school parking lot the night before. Every event on the West Maui calendar for 2026 is aimed at families. Most of them start at 4 p.m. or earlier, and the one Halloween event on Front Street is a costume contest for kids 12 and under on a restaurant deck.

Lahaina's Halloween started getting smaller and more family-centered long before August 2023. This year's calendar continues that shift.

The Party That Was Already Getting Younger

Front Street Halloween started as a local cruising night. By the mid-2000s it had grown into what people called the "Mardi Gras of the Pacific," and Maui No Ka ʻOi Magazine reported in 2008 that crowds had passed 30,000. After that the event changed in stages:

  1. 2008. According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Maui County's Cultural Resources Commission denied the organizers' permit after complaints about lewd costumes and behavior, and over concerns that the party did not support the Hawaiian cultural heritage of the historic district.
  2. 2009 and 2010. The Lahaina News reported that organizers did not apply in 2009. In 2010 they withdrew their application after county planners said staff would not recommend approval. Thousands showed up in those years anyway, with no road closure and no official contest, though Civil Beat noted the crowds were smaller.
  3. 2011. The street celebration came back with a revised setup that organizers described as family-friendly. The Star-Advertiser put that year's crowd at about 20,000.
  4. 2019. Civil Beat described that year's Front Street event as more and more focused on keiki and family activities. Photo coverage of the street event runs through 2022.

Between the 2008 report and the 2011 return, the crowd went from more than 30,000 to about 20,000. By 2019 the focus had moved from adults in costume to kids collecting candy. The 2026 calendar goes further in the same direction. Every West Maui event listed below is either free or built around children, and only one of them goes late into the evening.

Friday Comes First

The week opens on Friday, October 23. Sacred Hearts School holds its Trunk or Treat from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Maria Lanakila parking lot, with snacks, treats, crafts and a vote for best-decorated trunk, according to the Maui Family Magazine Halloween roundup. It's a weeknight evening event on a church lot, the kind of small-scale Halloween the town has been moving toward for years.

For older kids and adults who want something scarier, the same roundup lists Halloween Hunt 2026 at Maui Paintball on October 23, 24 and 30. It's a half-mile walk past burning cars and a haunted forest full of zombies and clowns, for $22, and no one under 8 is admitted. It's the only West Maui listing that keeps young children out.

Saturday, Hour by Hour

Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, and the organizers have spread their schedules across the afternoon and evening. Here's how it lines up, using each organizer's own posted times:

Time Where What's happening
2:30–3:30 p.m. Coco Deck, Front Street Keiki costume contest registration, ages 12 and under
4:00 p.m. Coco Deck Costume contest winner announced; must be present
4:00 p.m. start Honokowai Beach Park Trick-or-treat stations, kendama competition, community art, costume contests
4:00–7:00 p.m. Whalers Village, Kaanapali ʻOhanaween trick-or-treating, bounce houses, face painting
4:00–9:00 p.m. Lahaina Cannery Trick-or-treating
4:00–6:00 p.m. Lahaina Cannery Photos with Spiderman
5:00 p.m. Lahaina Cannery and Whalers Village Costume contests at both
5:30 p.m. Whalers Village Costume parade
After dark Honokowai Beach Park Outdoor double feature, The Goonies and Coco
7:00–10:30 p.m. Lahaina Cannery Live music and DJ

The table shows the biggest planning decision. Coco Deck's contest registration closes at 3:30 p.m. and its winner is announced at 4 p.m., just as the other three events open. That makes it the only contest you can enter before the 4 p.m. starts. The Cannery and Whalers Village both hold their costume contests at 5 p.m. A family that wants a shot at a prize at both will have to pick one.

Coco Deck. The Halloween Tailgate Party mixes football, cornhole, wing specials and Coco Deck's monster mascots. Kids need to arrive between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. to enter the contest. Staff do the judging, and the winner gets Trampoline Park passes. Coco Deck sits on Front Street, so this is the only Halloween event on the street in 2026, and it wraps up in the middle of the afternoon.

Honokowai Beach Park. Hana Kokua's Spooktacular Family Fun Halloween is free. It starts at 4 p.m. with trick-or-treat stations, a kendama competition, a giant community art project and costume contests, then moves to the movies after sunset. Bring blankets. One listing calls October 31 a Friday. It's a Saturday this year.

Whalers Village. The center calls its event ʻOhanaween, and it runs from 4 to 7 p.m. with trick-or-treating, bounce houses, face painting, a 5 p.m. costume contest and a 5:30 p.m. costume parade.

Lahaina Cannery. The Halloween Spooktacular is free and runs from 4 to 10:30 p.m. Trick-or-treating goes until 9, and face painting and balloon twisting run from 4 to 7. Costume contest categories are Keiki 0–2, Keiki 2–5, Keiki 6–10, and ʻOhana & Adults. Some roundups list the Cannery's hours as 4 to 9. That's just the trick-or-treating window. The full event, with live music and a DJ, goes to 10:30. It's also the only contest lineup this year with an adult category, and its live music makes it the one West Maui event that runs late into the night.

What Comes Next at the Edge of Front Street

Lahaina's next public gathering place is set to open on the same ground where the old Halloween crowds used to spill over. The ʻUlu o Lele Marketplace, an $8 million pilot run by the Hawaiian Council, Maui County and the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, is going in on the former Outlets of Maui site. West Hawaii Today, reprinting a Honolulu Star-Advertiser report, described plans for 17 retail units and eight food-truck spaces, with subsidized rents between $800 and $1,500 and priority for businesses directly affected by the fire.

In July the county expected a September opening. The marketplace's own timeline has since pushed that back. Vendor applications closed in late September, selections and leases were scheduled for October, and the current ʻUlu o Lele timeline gives November as the target opening, with a note that the date may still shift depending on construction, site readiness and permitting.

Courtney Lazo, a Lahaina-born small-business owner quoted in that same report, described the location's appeal this way:

"It allows our people to kind of inch their way back into our town … baby steps."

Some of the street is already back in use. The county blessed the finished Front Street Railing and Walkway Project on July 1, which added sidewalk repairs, railings, lights, benches and planters along the 700 block. Atlantis Submarines resumed tours from Lahaina Harbor in June. The county's Banyan Court facility page still shows the park as closed.

For Halloween 2026, that leaves a Friday-night trunk-or-treat at Maria Lanakila, a 2:30 p.m. costume contest on Front Street, and three 4 p.m. starts at Honokowai, Kaanapali and the Cannery.
